The disappointment of the inaugural defeat in Clermont has passed for Toulouse. For their first outing in front of their Ernest-Wallon home crowd, Ugo Mola’s players signed a first-rate offensive performance to defeat a catchy La Rochelle team. After a penalty signed Thomas Ramos, it took only eleven minutes to see Cheslin Kolbe play against the Charente defense. After a touch from five meters, Ramos found the South African who was able to flatten quietly. But that early first try didn’t turn off Ronan O’Gara’s players. Indeed, following a carried ball, Pierre Bourgarit was propelled into the Toulouse in-goal before Ihaia West equalized at the half-hour mark. However, the Toulouse again accelerated with a high-class essay by Cheslin Kolbe. On the right wing, the world champion winger with the Springboks launched into a slalom in the heart of La Rochelle’s defense which allowed him to flatten his team’s second try in force. At the siren, Thomas Ramos allowed his team to find his locker room with ten points ahead.
The people of Toulouse have never panicked
After a new penalty from the Toulouse opener seven minutes after Ernest-Wallon’s return to the lawn, Ihaia West answered him then Dillyn Leyds brought Stade Rochelais to just three lengths. The South African rear came to conclude an action initiated by Arthur Retière. Entering the game shortly before the hour mark, Jules Plisson also used his penalty to keep La Rochelle three short lengths from Toulouse with ten minutes still to play … but the end of the match was one-sided for Ugo Mola players. La Rochelle’s indiscipline offered six new points to Thomas Ramos before Sofiane Guitoune, two minutes from the siren, came to kill all suspense. After an acceleration by Kolbe which surprised the defense of the Stade Rochelais, François Cros offered to relay before serving his international center which had no opposition before flattening the third and last try of the Stade Toulousain. Despite the absence of the offensive bonus, the champions of France 2019 clearly win (39-23) and start their season when, on the side of La Rochelle, the beautiful victory against Toulon is already far away.
