The Duchess of Sussex sent Archie Williams an emotional message, before the show ended.
Duchess Meghan Markle surprised one of America’s Got Talent talent show finalists, Archie Williams, with an emotional message before the show ended.
The man, a 59-year-old African-American from Louisiana, United States, drew attention with his voice, but even more so with his story: he served 37 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
A year after serving his sentence behind bars, on a rape charge, charged by a white woman, Archie entered the talent show, and fulfilled his well-deserved dream of taking the stage this season.
When the show’s producer and one of the judges, Simon Cowell, heard about his story, he was thrilled:
Archie’s performance is probably the most important in America’s Got Talent history. What happened to Archie is tragic. Although Archie’s voice is extraordinary, unfortunately his experience of being sent to prison for a crime he did not commit is more common than most people think. There are thousands of innocent people in prisons. I am honored to be an ambassador for The Innocence Project and want to do what I can to help more people like Archie, ”he said.
Meghan Markle was also moved by the story of the man who bears the same name as her son, and before the announcement of the winner, who this year was the artist and poet Brandon Leake, she commented in a video:
Hello, Archie. I just wanted you to know that we were very touched by your story and that we support you every week and not just because we like your name, ”joked Prince Harry’s wife.
“So this is a very special message for you, which I will probably say my whole life, but tonight is specifically for you: Archie, we are proud of you and we support you, we can’t wait to see what you do. We are in your corner. Have a good night”.
