Already winner of the Australian Open at the start of the year, Sofia Kenin is now very close to winning a second Grand Slam at age 21. Used to winning all her matches in three sets since the start of the tournament, the American has this time cut short to overcome Petra Kvitova (6-4, 7-5). Efficient on break points (2/2) and very regular on serve (79% of first balls) in the first set, Kenin started the match with his foot to the ground to quickly break away with a double break. Author of points and faults in this first set, Kvitova gradually scrambled to catch up, without being able to convert an opportunity to return to four games everywhere. Even led 0-30 on his face-off when concluding, Kenin did not falter to pocket the first set (6-4).

Kvitova’s regrets

After having missed a chance to make the break from the start of the second set, Kvitova saw her opponent steal his serve twice everywhere after a hung game. In the following game, the Czech had four opportunities to catch up, but Kenin was able to respond perfectly each time by being able to count on her serve again in the hottest moments. When serving for the first time for the game at 5-4, Kenin for the first time showed some signs of nervousness by letting his opponent stay in the game. Despite a gesture of annoyance with a throwing racquet, the American was not mentally affected by this breakthrough. She resumed Kvitova’s serve in stride before concluding the match on her first opportunity after a last bullet died in the lane before her eyes. The most regular player of the season in Grand Slam with a title and therefore at least one final to her credit, Kenin now has an appointment on Saturday with Iga Swiatek who has still not conceded a single set since the start of the tournament.
