Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese football star, has tested positive for Covid-19 and will forfeit Sweden on Wednesday night in Lisbon in the Nations League, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced on Tuesday. Cristiano Ronaldo has “tested positive for Covid-19 and will not play against Sweden,” the federation said in a statement published on its website, two days after Portugal’s 0-0 draw against France in which the Juventus Turin striker participated.

The star striker of the Portuguese selection “is asymptomatic” and is “in quarantine”, said the Federation. The other players of the Portuguese selection, tested Tuesday morning and whose results “are all negative”, will be able to train on Tuesday afternoon. Last week, before the trip to France, two other Portuguese players tested positive: Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes and Lille defender José Fonte.

The training session, which was initially scheduled for Tuesday morning, was postponed Tuesday morning without the federation giving any explanation. A pre-match press conference is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. local time in the presence of the Portuguese technician and a player from the selection, an FPF spokesperson confirmed to AFP. Cristiano Ronaldo is the latest footballer to date tested positive for the coronavirus after notably Neymar, Kylian Mbappé and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
