There had been Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic on the Tour de France, Matej Mohoric 4th in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and now here is Jan Tratnik! Slovenian cyclists are shining in this year 2020 and the Bahrain rider McLaren added another victory to their list on Tuesday by winning the 16th stage of the Giro. The 30-year-old puncheur-rouleur, member of the breakaway of the day, went to the end of his dream, to clinch his first victory on a Grand Tour and his first success since the prologue of the Tour de Romandie in April 2019. Present in a group of 28 who animated this long stage (229 kilometers) taking place in Friuli, Tratnik left alone in the final loop, which the riders had to cover three times around San Daniele del Friuli, where held the finish.

Bouchard seventh

Ben O’Connor (NTT) came back on him at the top of the last hill, fifteen kilometers from the finish. The duo worked well, until the last hectometers where Tratnik accelerated. The Australian could not follow, and it was the Slovenian who won solo. Behind, their 26 breakaway companions arrived in dropper: Enrico Battaglin, Kamil Malecki, Ben Swift, Andrea Vendrame, the first Frenchman, Geoffrey Bouchard, who finished seventh, but also Ruben Guerreiro and Giovanni Visconti, who fought for the best climber jersey throughout the day. (the Italian keeps it, with 30 points ahead of the Portuguese).

Kelderman lets go two seconds

Far behind, the peloton, which did not force on this day and quickly let the breakaway take time because it was not dangerous for the general classification, arrived thirteen minutes later. And the first rider of this peloton was none other than Joao Almeida, the pink jersey, who took advantage of the finish on the hill to accelerate and gain two seconds from all his rivals, starting with his runner-up, Wilco Kelderman, who failed to follow him. Always that taken before the formidable stage on Wednesday and the arrival in Madonna di Campiglio.
