Passed Mercedes to launch the weekend in Portimao. The first free practice session of the Portuguese Grand Prix, 12th round of the season, once again saw the Silver Arrows now dressed in black set the tone. With an advantage for Valetteri Bottas over Lewis Hamilton during this first time-taking on the Algarve circuit. With a fastest lap of 1’18 ”140, the Finn was ahead of his teammate by three tenths. The two men, on medium tires, were faster than the Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), third fastest in these FP1s, nearly eight tenths behind Bottas. On hard tires too from the start to the end of the session, Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) sits between the two Red Bulls, Alexander Albon setting the fifth fastest time.

Grosjean and Ocon in the depths

Perhaps already the effect for the Monegasque pilot of a single-seater equipped with a new diffuser. Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri), first Frenchman, for his part closes the march of the Top 10, behind Carlos Sainz (McLaren), Sergio Perez (Racing Point), Kimi Raïkkönen (Alfa Romeo) and Daniel Ricciardo (Renault). Gasly is ahead of the other Ferrari, driven by Sebastian Vettel. On the other hand, a bad start for Romain Grosjean (Haas) and Sebastian Ocon (Renault).

Twenty-four hours after learning that his F1 adventure would probably end at the end of the season with his forced departure from the American team, the first had to settle for 17th place in this first free practice session . Ocon, meanwhile, had to the very poor performance of Nicholas Latifi (Williams, seven laps of the race, more than anyone on these FP1) not to finish last.
