Ostrava: Sabalenka wins second title of the season

Who would’ve believed that ? Executioner of his compatriot Victoria Azarenka (6-2, 6-2), Sunday afternoon in the final of the Ostrava tournament (Czech Republic) in just over an hour of play (1h02), Aryna Sabalenka (22 years old ) added a seventh singles title to his record, his second this season after winning in Doha last February. Yet it is almost a miracle that the young Belarusian player ranked 12th in the world was able to compete for the trophy to the finalist of the last US Open. During this week haloed at the arrival of this first tournament won by Sabalenka since the resumption of the season, the Belarusian had indeed found herself twice at the edge of the precipice.

But against the young American nugget Cori Gauff, whom she had managed to overthrow for her debut in the tournament, in the 2nd round (Gauff had won the first set 6-1 and the two young women were tied 5-5 in the second ), and, above all and more, against Sara Sorribes Tormo, who led 6-0 and … 4-0 before the future winner of the event wins at the cost of a completely mad comeback by inflicting in turn a 6-0 to the Spaniard in the third set, the native of Minsk was out each time.

Azarenka unable to resist

And after setting the record straight against American Brady in the semi-finals, she spent her nerves one last time on Sunday on an Azarenka unable to withstand the opposing hurricane despite a slight (but very timid) reaction in Act II of this final – she broke up by signing her only break in the game when she was already clearly dominated: 4-1 – by the winner of Cincinnati last August. The number 14 in the standings and recent mother of a little Leo (whom she greeted at the microphone after her defeat), visibly affected in the neck (she brought in the physiotherapist in this sense during the meeting), had already left Roland- Garros, a few weeks ago, on such a drop (6-2, 6-2 against the Slovak Schmiedlova). But that Sabalenka has come a long way!
