The signing of the cooperation agreement between the The Daily News Box of Ecuador and the Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital of the United States, was completed, this Wednesday, as a result of the work promoted by the Vice Presidency of the Republic in the last two months, with the in order to improve the capacities of public pediatric hospitals and professionalize the medical service for the care of children with catastrophic illnesses in the country.
This technical cooperation consists of care, research, training and strengthening of human talent that will improve the management, innovation and treatment processes of this disease that affects approximately 1000 children in Ecuador annually.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Latin America. In Ecuador, 52% of cases correspond to leukemia, where only 1 in 2 children survives, while in developed countries 9 out of 10 children manage to overcome the disease. Faced with this reality, the Vice Presidency launched the Círculo Manos que Alivian, with a focus on the humanization of public service and strengthening of scientific and research capacities that allow greater life expectancy.
The Vice President highlighted: “in the midst of the tragedy of the pain of a sick child and his family, it is the responsibility of the Ecuadorian State to provide a timely response with a professionalized health service, with sufficient capacities, with the possibility of exchanging information on new and more advanced treatments, with second opinions, with joint research to have access to more accurate diagnoses and to implement protocols that allow increasing the life expectancy of the poorest of the poor, those who lack the basics, health, more even if it is about children ”.
Saint Jude Children’s Research is a hospital based in Memphis, Tennessee, in the United States, recognized as the most relevant hospital in pediatric cancer terms in the United States and one of the most important in scientific research to combat it in the world. Submission is to promote, through medical research, the treatments, cures and means of prevention of catastrophic pediatric diseases.
Within this framework, it maintains a global initiative to improve the survival of children with cancer and life-threatening blood diseases in low- and middle-income countries. Its Executive Vice President, Carlos Rodríguez Galindo, highlighted the work they carry out through cooperation with various countries so that no child dies in the world from any disease, “together we can advance in the care of children with cancer in Ecuador, we are very committed to this collaboration moving forward, “he added during his speech at the event, via videoconference, from Memphis, United States.
As part of the work for comprehensive care for children, last September, a cooperation agreement was also signed between the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Barcelona, Spain, and the The Daily News Box, with the aim of, on the one hand, , professionalize and humanize the service of doctors and nurses of the pediatric hospitals Francisco de Icaza Bustamante, in Guayaquil, and Baca Ortiz, in Quito, related to the care of children in the areas of oncology, and on the other, support research processes of rare diseases, innovation and comprehensive care for the patient’s environment.
Juan Carlos Zevallos, Minister of Health, said that “science, human resources and this cooperative work contribute to reducing the suffering of a child and his family. St. Jude offers us this great help to provide the treatment of children no matter where they come from ”. Putting children at the center and joining forces to alleviate the burden of those who need it most is one of the objectives of the vice-presidential administration, for which it has promoted public and private national cooperation, the signing of agreements.
The Vice President closed her participation by saying: “For those parents who today are going through the pain of their children’s illness, hearing the name Mr. Jude Childrens Hospital is a hope. A hospital that started with a survival of 20% in terms of childhood cancer and today is 80%. A hospital that began with a survival rate of 4% in acute lymphoblastic leukemias and that today its survival rate in this type of disease is 94%. Through permanent research, innovation, and human quality, sharing its mission and knowledge with the world. Thanks to St. Jude Hospital for being an example that nothing we do will be good if it is only for our own benefit, but it makes sense when someone else benefits. “
