Rolex Paris Masters: Anderson gives up and lets Medvedev qualify

Nov 4, 2020
This may not be the way Daniil Medvedev wanted to qualify. Opposed to the South African in the second round of the Masters 1000 at Paris-Bercy, the number 3 seed saw his opponent throw in the towel even before the end of the first set. A meeting which, however, was very balanced between the two players. Daniil Medvedev first allowed five break points in the third and fifth games before being himself worried by the 86th player in the world in the eighth game. Logically enough, the two players had to play a decisive game in which the world number 5 took the advantage to lead five points to two. It was then that Kevin Anderson, visibly affected in the right thigh, who was ostensibly bandaged for this meeting, decided to end the meeting prematurely by giving up, he who had already taken advantage of the abandonment of Laslo Djere in the first tower. A second retirement in a row for the South African, who conceded victory to Andrey Rublev in the semi-finals of the ATP tournament in Vienna last week and was uncertain for the Paris tournament. Alex de Minaur or Lorenzo Sonego will be Daniil Medvedev’s opponent for a place in the quarter-finals.
