IPSWICH, England (AP) – English singer Ed Sheeran is the new shirt sponsor of third division football club Ipswich.
The longtime Ipswich fan, known for songs like “Shape of You” and “Perfect”, signed a one-year contract on Thursday to sponsor the men’s and women’s shirts next season.
“The football club is a huge part of the local community and this is my way of showing my support,” said the 30-year-old musician, who grew up in the area. “I have always enjoyed my trips to Portman Road and look forward to going back there as soon as supporters are allowed back into the stadiums.”
Ipswich is in the middle of the league table in League One with two games to go, while the women’s team plays in the fourth division.
A US consortium recently bought the club and has pledged to invest to earn promotion to the second division.
“With the new owners coming in from the US, there are sure to be exciting times for Ipswich fans, including myself,” said Sheeran.
The new logo includes mathematical symbols and the word “TOUR”. His albums use mathematical symbols as names.
England captain Harry Kane is the shirt sponsor of the fourth division club, Leyton Orient, his former club. The shirts bear thanks to frontline workers who are fighting the coronavirus pandemic. The Tottenham striker announced on Thursday that Leyton Orient’s home shirt will honor a good cause for the country’s military veterans next season.
