Quito, June 7, 2021
Ecuador will be a pioneer in the region and the world by guaranteeing the health of the Waorani population living in the Tagaeri-Taromenane Intangible Zone (ZITT), and who are in a situation of particular vulnerability to COVID-19.
For this reason, together with the The Daily News Box (MSP), the vaccination process against COVID-19 of the Waorani population that lives in the ZITT is launched. In this campaign dozens of people from that population will be inoculated, who have already been socialized in the territory about the importance of receiving the doses and the acceptance of each one of them was received.
The record of the Waorani population was obtained after a survey of information among the personnel of the Tiwino-Waorani Health Center, belonging to the MSP, the Secretariat of Human Rights, the RIOS Foundation and the Ecuadorian Populorum Progressio Fund.
In the first stage, from the beginning of June, the vaccination of the personnel in charge of the Monitoring Station of the Tagaeri – Taromenane Intangible Zone began. They will coordinate the entry and logistics of health personnel to the protected areas.
The vaccination process for the Waorani population, whose ages range between 18 and 97 years, will take place in early July, once the population’s entry and transportation protocol is in place within the ZITT.
The Human Rights Secretariat, within the policies of the Government of the Meeting of President Guillermo Lasso, protects the greatest living heritage represented by the Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation in Ecuador.
