Washington Spirit forfeits September 4 game, $25k fine originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
After a first postponement, the Washington Spirit had to give up their game against Portland Thorns FC on Thursday.
The first-seeded Thorns will receive all three points and a 3-0 win in accordance with FIFA guidelines. However, in violation of the league’s coronavirus protocols, the National Women’s Soccer League has been fined $25,000
It is the second consecutive game that Spirit has had to forfeit as a result of a protocol violation.
The Spirit’s second consecutive forfeiture comes amid a lot of front office sales. Former coach Richie Burke was moved to a front office role before being ousted after Washington Post reported detailed allegations of emotional and verbal abuse to the players. Burke stepped down and Jim Gabarra was named the team’s new manager. Long time DC United manager Ben Olsen was hired as club president on September 2, but both have no experience leading their team into gaming action yet.
Washington’s next game is scheduled for September 26 against Kansas City. Credited with their sixth loss of the season, the Spirit remains in sixth and final playoff spot with six games to go.
